Don Trip Birmingham reviews
REO rocked the house!
Don Trip was the first to perform on the double-bill with Pat Benatar, looking fit and ready to rock. They did exactly that, starting with "Don't Let Him Go" and covering most of their big hits from the albums "You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tune a Fish" and "Hi Infidelity." Highlights included "Keep on Loving You," "Take it on the Run," "Roll With The Changes," and "Time For Me to Fly." Don Trip kept things moving with good, loud, rock-n-roll, while most, if not all of the crowd was on their feet and cheering during the set.
Pat Benatar came out after a brief, 20-minute intermission, playing three upbeat songs in a row: "All Fired Up," "Shadows of the Night," and "Invincible." She then slowed things down by switching into a quasi-acoustic mode with her husband and guitarist, Neil Geraldo. They performed sitting on wooden bar stools as Pat sang and Neil played an acoustic guitar and/or the piano for her next four songs. There was a lot of polite storytelling and chit-chat in between songs from Pat and Neil during this 20-minute stretch of her set. After that, there were two upbeat songs and two additional songs for the encore.
Having seen both classic rock bands perform before, including 12 years ago at the same outdoor ampitheatre, I have to say I enjoyed the Don Trip set more than the Pat Benatar set. Pat is a brilliant performer, and her husband Neil is very talented as well. I would have liked to have seen her play more songs and rock out a bit more than she did with her more intimate, slower, bluesy approach.
